1998 Ausone, St-Emilion SKU #999608 97 points James Suckling Outer quote mark I’m still looking forward to tasting the great Château Ausone of Saint-Émilion later this week, but in the meantime I’m thinking back to this great 1998 I had this summer. In fact, it looks like 2014 was the antithesis of 1998, a year that saw the Right Bank and the early-ripening-merlot-dominated blends triumph over the Left Bank; as I’ve just written, I believe 2014 is showing much better for cabernet sauvignon and the Right Bank. Even so, this was tight and powerful with hints of cream and blueberries. It was full and pretty with firm tannins. On the finish it was so long and intense. Some balsamic and dried fruit undertones. It’s only beginning to open up now. Inner quote mark (3/2015) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Outer quote mark Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London. A deep garnet core with some ageing on the rim. The bouquet is very attractive, beginning to develop secondary aromas with macerated black cherries, blueberry, honey a touch of damson and a touch of espresso. Superb definition, the oak fully integrated into the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied, very fine tannins, still very taut with noticeable acidity. This is certainly an Ausone that would benefit from decanting, the finish developing an almost Burgundian texture with red cherries, a touch of bergamot and a hint of Chinese tea. Again, it needs time, for there is a lot of glycerin at the moment. Great length and persistency, fanning out beautifully with time in the glass. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2009) 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Outer quote mark Saturated deep ruby, much darker and brighter than the other vintages tasted. Sappy, fresh aromas of boysenberry, cassis, minerals, bitter chocolate and espresso, with complicating notes of underbrush and earth. Extremely pure and penetrating, with fruit of steel and a powerful mineral underpinning. Finishes with strong, firm tannins and great persistence. Essence of Ausone, without the funkiness shown by so many past vintages of this wine. Offers exciting potential. 95+ Inner quote mark (8/2002) 95 points Wine Spectator Outer quote mark Dark ruby color. Aromas of lavender, violet, mint and crushed berries. Full-bodied, with polished, chewy tannins and lots of mint, blackberry and wet earth flavors. Goes on and on. Tight and powerful. Needs a long time to open still. (JS, Web-2009) Inner quote mark Jancis Robinson Outer quote mark Dark crimson. Lightweight nose. Round and supple with firm tannins on the finish. Embryonic – but probably worth waiting for. (JR) 17.5+/20 Inner quote mark (3/2006) K&L Notes Black color. Mocha aromas with meaty undertones. Great breadth and depth. Tannic finish. 50% Merlot and 50% Cab Franc. Superb wine with great aging potential.
