The original Laphroaig, distilled following traditions laid down by Ian Hunter over 75 years ago. In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavor. Those enjoying the 10 Year Old will first notice the bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness. This full-bodied variant is the foundation of all Laphroaig expressions and comes with a long finish. As in the past years, our Distillery Manager, John Campbell, handcrafted this limited edition malt to celebrate friendship. Cairdeas, meaning friendship in Gaelic, is created each year for the Friends of Laphroaig and launched at the Feis Ile festival on Islay in May. Laid to rest in Warehouse 8 and 10, Cairdeas Fino showcases a special double maturation in first fill bourbon casks then Fino Sherry casks. Laphroaig Lore Scotch Whisky is a triple maturation in 3 types of cask. The first maturation is American oak, ex-bourbon barrels. We then select the most suitable of these barrels, containing a range of different aged spirit and transfer into small 19th century style Quarter Casks for a second maturation. The final maturation is in specially selected large European oak, Oloroso Sherry casks. Laphroaig Quarter Cask offers an irresistible doubling of flavor, due to the double maturation in two barrels made of American oak. Still-maturing whisky from standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in Laphroaig's warehouse just a stone's throw from the Atlantic shore. Matured in smaller casks for increased contact with the oak, this whisky brings the classic smokiness of peat with hints of coconut and banana to the nose. Laphroaig Select Cask is created from carefully selected casks of each of our key styles stretching back in time with the heart of the spirit drawn from a final maturation in new, American oak casks. With spirit selected by our master distiller from Quarter Cask, our PX Cask and Triple Wood (European Oak casks) and a final addition of 10YO, it represents a subtle blending of peat, oak and sweetness.
